In the cross-platform release Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing, players can choose from a number of Sega characters, each with unique vehicles and special abilities, for races around the environments of various classic Sega games. Avoid obstacles, find shortcuts, and collect power-ups around the track. Play against your friends in four-player split screen on the Wii and PS3, or via Nintendo Wi-Fi on the DS edition. No word on the availability of motion controls for the Wii.
The WiiWare release, GhostSlayer, on the other hand, is all about the motion controls. One of the first sword-fighting games to use the new WiiMotion plus, the protagonist is wielding a ghost-slaying sword, and must thrust and parry his way through hundreds of hostile specters on a path to defeat the terrible Ghost Queen, picking up new weapons and techniques along the way. The game doesn’t require the use of the WiiMotionPlus, but I don’t think there would be much of a point without it.
Another cross-platform release this week is Pony Friends 2. This sequel brings the world of ponies even closer, as players can now fully customize their pony, then race, brush, feed, and keep it happy in a variety of mini-games. The focus this time is an exploration mode, where players can take their ponies out into the woods to try and take photos of rare animals, and open secret features of the game. On the Wii, motion controls allow the player to take direct control of reins, horse-shoe cleaning pick things, and whatever else. A multi-player mode lets you race against your friends, compete in mini-games, or just explore the wilderness together.
Icrontic’s spotlight release this week is the cross-platform Greed Corp. Turn-based tactical battle games have become a rare thing in the gaming world, so it’s refreshing to see this title arrive on shelves. Set in the Steamy Victorian world of Mistbound, the player chooses from one of four corporations in a time when the world is falling apart. The limited resources of the planet’s floating islands are disappearing quickly, and the four corporations must battle it out in an attempt to grab the last scraps of energy. Each battle takes place on a floating island above the mists. Collecting resources causes the island to shrink, as bits of it keep falling off into the void. The ever-shrinking nature of the battlefield forces players to work quickly, meaning each match will only last around twenty minutes. With clever artistic design, and a swank theme on top of the turn-based mechanic, any fan of tactical combat and resource management-style games should give this one a shot.
As always, you can purchase some of these games from Ye Olde Icrontic Gaming Shoppe.
