Available for download this week, we find Fat Princess for PS3. This wacky take on capture the flag pits teams of up to 16 players against each other online in a class-based battle to rescue their princess from the opposite tower. The princess has become fat in her captivity however, and it will require the strength of many men to carry her home after her rescue. Players will choose between five different classes (Worker, Warrior, Ranger, Mage and Priest) in their attempt to balance the rescue of their own princess with defending the enemy’s princess from being rescued, along the way collecting resources to upgrade their castle and weaponry.
Resource management becomes an important skill in East India Company for the PC. Take on the role of a colonial-era trader working around the coasts of Africa and South Asia. Find good deals, upgrade your ships, fight pirates, and attempt hostile takeovers of other trading companies. Features include the ability to choose your tactical depth, as you assign orders to either entire fleets or to individual ships. It also supports multiplayer over the internet.
If you follow Penny Arcade, you’ve noticed that BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger for PS3 and XBox360 has been the subject of their humor for the last two strips. While it’s been out in arcades for 8 months, it’s finally being released for home systems, so most of you, dear readers, are probably seeing it for the first time. BlazBlue seems like a spiritual successor to Guilty Gear. Many of its mechanics and aesthetic stylization seem to be a nod in that direction, including the hand-drawn, anime style character art. Of course, it has a deep and intricate plot about the end of the world or somesuch nonsense, but I think that if there is one genre where plot lines are almost universally ignored, it’s button-mashing fighters. The gimmick with this one is some abilities which act as physics manipulation on the battlefield. However deep it is, I know that I’ll just be jumping around, hitting the A button as many times as possible. It’s a strategy that gets me the win roughly 10% of the time, and always makes my friends, even my opponent at the time, yell out move combinations which I will promptly ignore in favor of repeated jump-kicks.
The sequel to Wii Sports, Wii Sports Resort, has claimed the Icrontic Spotlight for this week. This is the game that will introduce us all to the Wii MotionPlus accessory. Plug this small box into the bottom of the WiiMote to increase the accuracy of the motion sensor. With this new device, the remote will be capable of much greater control of in-game actions. The game itself places the player’s Mii on Wahu Island, where they can participate in many different activities that take advantage of the improved control. Activities include “Archery, Frisbee®, Basketball, Cycling, Canoeing, Power Cruising, Table Tennis, Air Sports, Bowling, Swordplay, Golf, and Wakeboarding”. If you’ve played the version of Table Tennis that comes in WiiPlay, then you know that the original WiiMote sensor, while great, couldn’t hadle everything that was asked of it. Rob “GHoosdum” Updegrove and I got the opportunity to try the Wii Sports Resort Table Tennis at E3, and I can tell you that the fludity and range of control is vastly improved with MotionPlus. Anyone who gets excited by motion controls should give this one a try.
