First up this week is the DSi Ware release Libera Wing. There only very few tower defense games on the DS, so this one is worth mentioning just for that. In addition, it features strategic gameplay through 60 levels including 24 “quickplay” levels for when you only have a few minutes.
The cross-platform release Rooms: The Main Building is an indie puzzle game with an interesting mechanic. The protagonist is trapped in a series of rooms, and must find a way to escape using the items in the level. The added challenge comes from the nature of the rooms themselves, which slide around the building like a tile puzzle. Line up the rooms, and grab the golden key to escape each level, and solve the mystery behind The Main Building.
For the Wii this week, we’re getting Red Steel 2. The first Red Steel game was one of the first games to take advantage of the Wii motion controls for melee combat, and now Red Steel 2 takes it to the next level as one of the first games to feature swordplay compatible with the Wii Motion Plus, which comes bundled with the game. Play as the nameless Swordsman as he adventures across a West World-style wasteland in search of the man who ordered the massacre of the Kusagari-clan, to which the Swordsman belongs. Use the Wii Motion Plus to fight with a wide variety of swordplay techniques and special moves, fighting off as many as six opponents simultaneously.
The Icrontic Spotlight Release this week is on the DS. Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey is a demon-centric jRPG with multiple endings. An anomaly has opened over the Antarctic, and a diverse team has gone to investigate. Once inside, they discover a portal through which demons are invading the earth. At first attempting only to escape, the small team will decide the fate of the world with their actions. As with past Shin Megami Tensei games, the protagonist will be given many choices throughout the demon invasion. His answers, and his eventual alliances will determine his alignment, and through him, the alignment of the post-invasion earth. Will the future be full of good or evil? Move through the levels in first-person 3D, and fight in traditional turn-based RPG style. Meet demons of every shape, size, and persuasion along your journey, and even craft your own demons using the Demon Fusion system. If you’ve been looking for a unique take on the jRPG genre, you might want to take a closer look at this one.
