New Releases for The Week of Flying Boys and Domo-kun

Astro Boy: The Video Game

Astro Boy: The Video Game

Our first feature this week is the cross-platform release, Astroboy: The Video Game. This new video game adaptation of the Astro Boy franchise is based on the plot of the new Astro Boy CGI movie. Use all of Astro Boy’s signature moves, including his Rocket Boots, Finger Lasers, Arm Cannon, and Butt Machine Gun, to defeat the evil robot army. The gameplay is a mixture of platformer levels, and side-scrolling shooter levels. There will be a 2-player Co-op mode, but no details as to how it will work.

Medieval Games

Medieval Games

For the Wii this week, we’ll be getting Medieval Games. This is a Mario Party-style party game, which means board-game movement interspersed with mini-games of various types, all within a medieval fairy-tale setting. That’s all well and good, but the thing that makes this entry stand out is its developer. Bethesda is not really known for goofy party games, so it’ll be interesting to see where they’ve taken the genre.

Rock-and-Roll Domo

The widely recognizable NHK Japan mascot, Domo will be starring in a series of DSi games this week. Hard-Hat Domo is a color-matching puzzle game in which Domo is trying to get to the top of a construction site. In White-Water Domo, Domo must reach the end of a Rafting course as fast as possible to advance to the next stage.  Pro-Putt Domo is a classic golfing game in which players must aim and time Domo’s swings. Crash-Course Domo is a bicycle racing game against AI opponents. Finally Rock-n-Roll Domo is a simple rhythm game, using the touch-screen controls.

Borderlands

Borderlands

Our Icrontic Spotlight release this week is the cross-platform release Borderlands–a FPS RPG set on a lawless desert planet in the distant future. It’s been seven years since everyone but the poorest inhabitants of Pandora left to find a new home, and the entire world has descended into chaos. In addition, the planet is emerging from a decades long winter to reveal that dangerous creatures had been hibernating just below the surface during the colony’s entire history. Choose one of four pre-defined characters, each with their own attributes and skill trees, and venture out in to the wastes in attempt to find the ancient cache of alien technology and save the planet. The game features 4-player co-op play, and randomizers for almost everything that can be randomized, including items, level and wilderness layouts, and monster stats and attacks, lending itself to a potentially very high replay value. The visuals, however,  are cell-shaded and gritty, which is an odd-looking combination, and the writing and humor seem a bit juvenile, which may turn off some players. The game will be released for the PC next week.

Comments

  1. Bandrik
Bandrik Holy cow, the Astro Boy game actually looked pretty freaking cool. I'm a big fan of 2D platformers AND shooters. Together, they may just rock my world.

Though then again, I'm docking it points for having the words "The Video Game" in the title. It just sounds so... lame. I'm looking at you too, Ghostbusters. =P

    Nice video, CB!
  2. chrisWhite
chrisWhite CB, your videos get better and better each week! Fantastic!

Astro Boy looks kind of fun, I love that we're seeing a return of 2D platformers like this and Shadow Complex, it's a fun genre!

Borerlands looks really interesting, but it isn't at the top of my queue, I'm sure I'll give it ago after the big games coming out in the next three months I'm really looking forward to. Maybe the price will drop by then too.
  3. Obsidian
Obsidian Pshht, Astro Boy looks terrible. All I care about is Borderlands :D

CB, your voice sounds like an old Englishman or something... in a good way, if that's possible.
  4. UPSLynx
UPSLynx Argh! Why is Domo so popular all of a sudden? Domo playing golf? ....sigh. He's just the thing that kills kittens after masturbation. I don't want to play video games with it.

Also, bethesda making a party game? wtf.

    Boarderlands. Yes please.
  5. UPSLynx
    UPSLynx LOL "Boarderlands" Really, spelling?

I'm not editing that. I don't deserve the correction.
  6. Obsidian
Obsidian That was an error on Amazon's part. Medieval Games is actually made by Vir2l Studios and N-Fusion. I've found no link to Bethesda with Medieval Games.
