New Releases for The Week of Goblin Pawns

Battle vs. Chess

The list of releases looks long this week, but when we discount all of the expansions, rereleases, ports, and cruft, we’re really only left with one vaguely interesting new game, Battle vs. Chess. This new chess game seems to be an homage to the original Interplay game  Battle Chess from 1988. In this remake, players can choose to play a normal chess game with animated battles, as the original game, or they can play in a Battle Mode in which the animated pieces have defensive abilities which randomly cause some attack moves to be undone based on certain attack circumstances. Additionally, there are challenge scenarios, and alternately sized and shaped boards to play on. Its primary feature of interest to hard-core chess players is the Fritz algorithm system (if you play a lot of chess games, you already know what this is. If you don’t, you probably don’t care) integrated into the AI for highly scalable difficulty.

  1. primesuspect
primesuspect I can't believe you don't think Front Mission Evolved is worthy of being an interesting release.
  2. Thrax
Thrax Front Mission 3 is easily one of my top-10 all-time games. I bought it on a lark from Flipside in Clawson when I was 13 or 14. I had traded in my N64 and wanted additional PSX games, and I was very intrigued by the cover and box art. I spent the next 5 days playing 8-10 hours a day over summer vacation to beat one of the two story arcs in that game.

I am very excited for the release of FME!
  3. primesuspect
primesuspect FME is a third-person action game, though. Don't get your hopes up too much; it's pretty divergent from its predecessors. Still, I'd definitely consider it at least an "interesting" new release.
  4. Thrax
Thrax Yeah, I watched some of the trailers on Steam when they popped up on the welcome page (I don't even like trailers! Damn you steam!). I'm just happy that the FM universe is still being worked on.

I wish I had a reliable way to go back and play the entire series from 3 on. Oh well. :/
