New Releases for The Week of Magical Blue Shells

New Releases for The Week of Magical Blue Shells

As usually happens this time of year, there is not much in the way of new releases this week. Publishers who think they have something important would never release them at this point in the year. Any expected hits would be released a bit closer to gift-giving time. We’ll see plenty of releases through December, but the only thing of mild interest we’ve got this week is the new Mario Kart game, Mario Kart 7. What could possibly be new in the seventh iteration of the classic cartoon racing game? Multiple environments. The gimmick this time is that, in addition to the race and item gathering mechanics we’ve become used to over the years, the tracks this time will have underwater as well as hang-time components, with each vehicle being given the ability to transform into a submarine and a hang-glider. This allows for each vehicle and driver to be differentiated yet further, with more stats to choose from. In addition, there are four new racers—Metal Mario, Lakitu, Honey Queen, and Wiggler, and three new items—Fire Flower, Super Leaf, and Lucky 7. That last one is the most interesting looking. It gives the player 7 items, which circle their Kart, and are used randomly as activated. With lots of new features, it’s worth a look.
