New releases for the Week of Massive Spaces and Georamas

Star Trek Online

Star Trek Online

We’re getting a hat trick of Massively Multiplayer games this week, starting with Star Trek Online for the PC. In this MMORPG each player takes command of either a Federation or Klingon starship, and explores the galaxy—making friends, fighting enemies, and completing quests. While in space, ship-to-ship combat has players maneuvering in a 3D environment to take the upper hand using the tech of the Star Trek universe. On the ground, players lead away-teams of four characters on instanced scientific, combat, and exploration missions.

The ships can be customized within certain Star-Trekky parameters, but when playing Federation, the player’s character can be widely customized—even allowing the player to create a custom alien race with a wide variety of potential facial features. The story takes place after the future events of “All Good Things…” (The most future canon of the television shows), and seem to depict a time of transition and exploration, when the Klingon Empire is once again a threat to the Federation. Play will be subscription-based only.

Global Agenda

Global Agenda

Also for the PC, the MMORPG Global Agenda brings us to 22C Earth, after a global catastrophe. A “megacorp” is ruling the Earth’s population, and as the devastated land slowly becomes habitable again, there is a rush to be the first to pillage and settle the new areas. Players take on the roles of secret agents who can specialize in assault, recon, medicine, or robotics. Similar to the new DDO model, players can choose to play for free, giving them access to most of the content, or they can pay for a premium subscription which would give them access to additional features that consist mostly of conveniences and end-game content.

White Knight Chronicles

White Knight Chronicles

For the PS3 we’re getting the Icrontic Spotlight for this week, White Knight Chronicles. This is a single player RPG with optional MMO content. The game itself seem like a spiritual successor to the popular Dark Cloud franchise. Gameplay consists mostly of dungeon crawling and loot gathering, but some of the loot consists of “georamas”, which the player can use to add buildings, people, and scenery to their town—allowing each player to customize their town with what kind of industry, shops and assistants they want for their play style. This town will act as the character’s home base throughout the adventures and, from there, they will be able to access the Massive Multiplayer content.

Some optional quests that the character receives will take place in a special area which they can either venture into alone, or team up with other players from GeoNet, White Knight Chronicle’s own matchmaking service. Playing these optional quests will grant the player access to unique items and georamas that they would not have found otherwise. Players can also visit other player’s towns to buy and sell items and talk to NPCs, with a copy of each town being stored on GeoNet, so that other players can visit at any time.

As always, you can purchase these games (and others) from Ye Olde Icrontic Gaming Shoppe.

chrisWhite Crap, Star Trek looks compelling, must stay far away from it. I might try out Global Agenda though, with its free to play model.
  2. Annes
Annes I know some IC people have been playing STO. I wonder what they think of it.
  3. CrazyJoe
CrazyJoe I have been playing since Open Beta and I am loving it... The USS Icrontic is patroling around killing all the dirty Klingons...

Obsidian Making History 2 has been delayed. It was originally expected to release on the 2nd but that's obviously not true as it's still not available. I'm normally not a big fan of low-budget strategy games but I played the first far too much for me not to be eager to get my hands on the sequel.

I went digging for you, and found a news release that puts the new date at "March 2010", which is strange because they already released in the UK. No explanation was given for the change.

Howdy, Stranger!
