First on the docket this week is the cross-platform release Blur. This hi-def racing game has power-up and weapon based gameplay, like Mario Kart but with realistic-looking cars. Collect Nitro boosts, mines, and electricity cannons to use against your opponents in a rolling-start internet multi-player race. The cars use realistic damage modeling, and the tracks feature multiple paths to keep things interesting. With the ability to handle up to 20 players, there is plenty of potential for action in each race.
In the PSP department, you’ll find Hexyz Force this week. In this jRPG players will follow two separate story-lines simultaneously. Cecilia is a priestess, who must defend her home from an ancient evil force. Levant is a soldier, betrayed by friends, and captured by his enemies. Both of them must fight to survive, using the Hexyz Force. Fight to become more powerful, and customize the weaopns to your liking, then use Hexyz Charges to deal massive amounts of damage. Battle to save the world from two different angles.
On the PC this week, we’ll get the turn-based tactics game, Legio. Few probably remember the ancient PC game, Dark Legions from Silicon Knights, but those who do will see some of that games’s unique gameplay style in Legio. In this game two players each create a small army of units, which they arrange on a small grid, which then becomes the battlefield. Each unit has different strengths and weaknesses, as well as different rules for movement and attack. The battle has multiple stages, starting on the drawbrige between two impossible castles, then moving inside depending upon the winner of the first battle. Pure tactics games are few and far between, so if that’s your genre, you’ll want to at least give this one a look.
This week’s spotlight shines on the red plumber’s cap of Super Mario Galaxy 2 for the Wii. Just as in the First Super Mario Galaxy, the player must direct Mario across many tiny jumping puzzle planets across dozens of galaxies, collecting star bits, in an effort to rescue Princess Peach from Bowser. This sequel adds many new puzzle mechanics, a few new power-ups—like Rock Mario and Cloud Mario—and gives the player access to Yoshi and Luigi in select levels. If you enjoyed Super Mario Galaxy, pick up the second one. It’s sure to be just as much fun.
