First game up this week is Cities XL for your PC. This SimCity-esque title looks to bring the city simulator genre into the current market, and after the disappointment of SimCity Societies, we need a new contender. This game has modern 3D graphics, with advanced camera controls, and lots of customizing options. One of the coolest features (and something I’ve been wanting from city simulators since my first one) is the ability to make more organic roads and freeways, rather than always conforming to the shape of the tile. It looks good, but will it measure up to the depth of the city building games of yore? If you want to find out, it’s available on Steam.
A major cross-platform release this week is Star Wars The Clone Wars: Republic Heroes. This is the first Star Wars game to feature the art, style, and story of the Clone Wars TV show. The story takes place between the first and second seasons of the show, so it’s not a conflict that players will have already seen. The gameplay itself is built around co-op play, so try to find a friend to help out if you decide to pick this one up.
On XBox Live Arcade this week, you’ll be able to download South Park Let’s Go Tower Defense Play!. Control one of the famous South Park characters, or play co-op with up to four players, as you defend South Park from the show’s many strange monsters, such as zombies, Mongolians, and ginger kids. The gameplay is a combination of classic tower defense and brawler. Build snow-forts and towers to direct the enemies, and then take them on one-at-a-time with thrown snowballs.
Our Spotlight Release this week is Lucidity, a stylistic puzzle game coming out for the PC and XBox360. This is the first game to come out of a LucasArts project encouraging their developers to create separate projects, where they are left to be creative and to break new ground. Control Sofi, a little girl exploring her own dreamscape, through numerous abstract landscape. The gameplay is that of a puzzle/platformer, but the puzzle elements are randomized to create a unique experience in each playthrough. That, in addition to the beautiful imagery, makes this game worth taking a look at. If nothing else, it’s an interesting experiment.
