King Arthur: Fallen Champions is a midquel for the King Arthur: The Role-Playing Wargame series. The game takes place far from the territories covered by the first two games, and details the exploits of three of Arthur’s most powerful allies while they prepare for what they face in King Arthur 2. Follow Sir Lionel to Britannia to rescue a fair damsel, help the enchantress Lady Corrigan find her way back to the Sidhe homeland of Tir na nÓg, and take the prophet Drest the Chosen far north into the land of the fierce Celts, to seek the destiny foretold him in his dreams. The mechanics match the first two games, and the engine looks not to have been updated.
The Icrontic Spotlight this week augments the genes of Deus Ex: Human Revolution. This new title is the conclusion of the in medias res Deus Ex trilogy, covering events roughly 25 years before the first game. The basic mechanics of the franchise here have been maintained. Players are still encouraged to solve problems by using approaches from the four ‘pillars of gameplay’—stealth, combat, diplomacy, and code-breaking. Almost every situation in the game can be solved with any of the four, with some leading naturally into others, and some being combinations of two—like choosing to snipe the leader of a troop in order to destroy their ability to fight effectively—for an experience which potentially includes all four pillars. A couple new features have appeared in this iteration however, in the form of two new augments. The biggest deal is that the player’s life will constantly regenerate. Lots of hardcore folks don’t like this, but I personally always prefer that there be some automatic health generation. It’s a hallmark of the game’s moving into a new era of gaming sensibility. The other is a Mirror’s Edge-esque tactical augmentation which highlights on the screen all of the objects that the player may interact with. The story details the origin of UNATCO and deals with the use of biomechanical augmentations, rather than the not-yet-developed nano augmentations featured the the other games of the franchise.
