New Releases for The Week of Shaman and Dream Girls

Catherine

Okay, so you’re this loser, bachelor guy, who is totally freaking out and drinking too much because his librarian-looking girlfriend, Katherine, is putting him on the rocks about marrying her. So, one night at the bar you meet this awesome hot chick named Catherine, and totally cheat on your girlfriend. Now you spend your days wondering which girl is right for you: the reliable and cute Katherine or the crazy but hot Catherine. At night your dreams are plagued by towers of moving blocks which seem to be trying to kill you as you dangerously ascend—a deadly pit stretching out beneath you—while a population of sheep-men attempt the same climb, but mostly just get in your way. Reports around town indicate that young men in the neighborhood have been dying in their sleep, and you fear that you will be one of them if you cannot survive the new tower presented to you each night. So, each night you push and pull the blocks into a shape that aides you in jumping to higher and yet more dangerous plateaus, while during the day you stress about Catherine and Katherine and try to put your life back together, as well as figure out what your future holds—spending most of your time each day in the local bar—where what you drink and what you say to the other patrons will determine aspects of that nights dream, and the outcome of your love life. That’s Catherine. (What the shit…. -ed.)

From Dust

The Icrontic Spotlight this week shines from the elemental sphere of From Dust, which is being called the spiritual successor to the classic Populous games. Here, players control a god of a tribe of island-dwellers, who has control over the powerful elemental forces of his island world. The character molds the land around him from the ground, watching as the supernaturally rapid forces of erosion and tectonics change the face of the landscape in mere minutes. Use these powers to guide your tribe through their development as they learn various technologies and discover a deep mythology. The game is controlled via the ‘sphere’ rather than a traditional HUD. The sphere uses gestures and contextual controls to manipulate the environment and use the spell-like powers that the shaman develops. The gameplay is divided into missions, with no real ‘sandbox’ mode, but after each mission is completed, that part of the world is open to explore and experiment in. It actually looks and sounds more like Black and White than Populous for gameplay, but doesn’t have the creature or morality spectrum of that game. I’m always a fan of these sorts of god-sim games, so I’m looking forward to checking it out.

Comments

  1. Zanthian
Zanthian Ubisoft confirmed to Joystiq today the PC version of From Dust has been delayed until mid-August.

The game will now release on August 17. From Dust hits Xbox Live Arcade this Wednesday.
  2. CB
CB Yup, I had to change that after writing the article. I will be waiting for the PC version on that one. I cannot imagine controlling a God-sim with anything other than a mouse.
  3. Koreish
Koreish Catherine is disgustingly hard but insanely addicting. Do recommend.
