Well, here we are at the beginning of a new year in gaming. Looking back we saw lots of interesting stuff come up. Much of it has already fallen away from the burning attention of the community, but some of what we saw this year will remain in our favorites list for years to come. Game releases are, of course, still in a post-holiday lull, but there are a few items coming out which didn’t quite make the holiday gift-giving deadline. Not that anyone is really all that interested in buying new games after Steam just helped everyone stock their larders for the harsh winter to come…
One game I’d like to point out this week however is Lost in Shadow, in which the protagonist is a boy trapped in the shadows. He must scale the inside of a great and malevolent tower. The boy can only navigate along the shadows in the tower, but is assisted by a light-casting fairy thing, which allows him to modify his shadow world by changing the cast of the various objects in the environment. Dangerous shadow monsters lurk in the same world, and endeavor to keep the boy from the top of the tower. The interesting thing here is the mix of platforming and physics puzzle elements, and while we have seen this mechanic before, we’ve seen it only to a degree, and not quite as fluidly, and engagingly as this new title.
