New Releases for The Week of Winged Girls and Paper Munchers

NywQuest: Kindred Spirits

NyxQuest: Kindred Spirits

From your WiiWare channel this week, you can pick up NyxQuest: Kindred Spirits, a two-player platformer set in ancient Greece. One player takes on the role of Nyx, a winged girl who is searching for her lost friend Icarus. The other player is the wielder of the forces of Mt. Olympus; appearing on screen only as a cursor, they use the WiiMote pointer to summon the powers of the gods to help Nyx in her quest. Like Super Mario Galaxy, which employed a similar mechanic for the second player, this may be a good game for a couple to play together.

Phantom Brave: We Meet Again

Phantom Brave: We Meet Again

Also on the Wii this week, Phantom Brave: We Meet Again is a new fantasy tactics game. The tactics mechanic pioneered by the Final Fantasy franchise is familiar and comfortable to many of us by now, and this one wants to mix it up just a bit. The new mechanic here is a pre-battle summoning session: before each combat, the protagonist summons spirits into the props on the battlefield, placing creatures in the rocks and the trees in preparation for the fight. The creatures stats are tied to what they were summoned into, so the player must pay attention to combinations that work well.

C.O.R.E.

C.O.R.E.

The Doom-esque title, C.O.R.E. for the DS is out this week. First-person shooters are rare on the DS due to its small screen and lack of analog controls, but this one is going to give it a go. A lone marine is sent to investigate a government facility which has been hit by a meteor, and there are going to be monsters to shoot. The game will feature single-cartridge 4-player deathmatch. Definitely one to look into if you’re looking for something unique for your next DS Wi-Fi party. Look for a full Icrontic review of this game in the next few weeks.

Bookworm Adventures: Volume 2

Bookworm Adventures: Volume 2

The focus of the Icrontic Spotlight this week is Bookworm Adventures: Volume 2 for the PC. The bibliophiles in the audience already know about the first Bookworm Adventures, but for those who don’t know: this franchise is to Boggle what Puzzle Quest is to Bejeweled. Make words on a grid, and defeat enemies, find items to increase your powers, and cast spells. The longer the words, the higher the attack power. The distinction here is that enemies don’t have to use the same grid to find words, they just have a standard set of attacks. This sequel introduces “companions”: literary friends who will travel with you throughout the story, using their special attacks at your command. Befriend characters like Mother Goose, H.G. Wells, and The Cheshire Cat. In addition, this new volume offers up 20+ new treasures, 130+ new enemy types, and several game-modes (although, sadly, no multi-player).

CB Sorry, I guess I missed that. I try not to feature ports or rereleases.

Garg Huh, I never heard about Phantom Brave before. My roommate's Wii looks like utter crap on his 1080p, so I'll see if I can track down a copy for my PS2.

NIS's cheezy cheeze dialog and plot just aren't my bag, but I am a total sucker for isometric sRPGs. What I've really been wanting for the last decade or so is a real follow-up to FFT on a console instead of a handheld. NIS games are the cheap drug that keeps me pacified in the meantime.

That, and this crap that a "friend" of mine had to tell me about a couple weeks ago. Now my life is ruined. I don't know how I can possibly be a productive member of society now that I know I can customize Tactics to my every whim.

drasnor I enjoy NIS's cheesy cheese dialog and plot. Linked for your pleasure, Tycho's review of Phantom Brave.

Garg And I thought Disgaea had ridiculous amounts of depth. That game should be a controlled substance.
