New video cards next week

april2April 2 looks like the special day for new video card announcements but don’t expect any surprises. ATI’s new darling, the HD 4890 is already being benched and is possibly for sale in Europe, much to Red Team’s chagrin. Looks to us like a pumped up HD 4870, but we hear it runs cooler.

NVIDIA is pushing forward with the announcement of the GTX 275 on the same day. TheInq says cards won’t be ready by then so you’ll have to wait until the 14th for them to actually ship. The GTX 275 is what happens when you slice a GTX 295 in half and then overclock the single GPU. It’d be nice to have leaked benchmark number for it too, but since the cards aren’t out we can only guess as to how it’ll perform.

Come next Thursday, it looks like ATI will be the winner in public opinion. Having a real product on hand helps measurably, even when the lead is only by two weeks. The first out of the gate gets accolades yet they don’t always win the race so we will have to wait for mid-April to see who comes out on top. And in the wake of all this, expect prices cuts to bring the HD 4870 and GTX 260 down even more.

Cliff_Forster I think both of these cards are simply product to bridge the space between now, and the eventual release of something that is truly new. If I were a betting man, I would say this tells us we are a number of months away from the 5xxx series product from ATI, and the next gen from Nvidia. I am betting its late summer before we see any "new" product. Probably just a couple of months ahead of the Windows 7 release.

Both the 4890 and GTX275 look like solid offerings, but neither realy feels like its doing anything to differentiate from current offerings. It just feels like unnecessary filler to create a little extra buzz for existing product lines.

Thrax Yeah, these are just the typical model refreshes that appear 6-8 months before a new generation. I would expect new cards in time for Christmas.
  3. Snarkasm
Snarkasm nV's also releasing some bumps to their workstation cards, like the NVS 295 and Quadro FX 5800.

Nothing particularly exciting, but as was mentioned, if they run cooler or under less power, might be something to look into for that sector.

Cliff_Forster I think the realy exciting story in graphics over the next couple of months might be the 40nm 48xx parts for notebooks. We will have to see how that all shakes out, but that could be realy exciting. I wonder if the shrink would yeild much of a power advantage for current desktop parts? Not sure, but if you could run either the 4870 or 4890 off a single six pin connector, then it would be something to talk about in desktop parts.
