The major cross platform release this month is Skate 2. This third entry in the surprisingly deeply storied Skate franchise takes place after the near destruction of San Vanelona, the city is partly ruined, and security has been stepped up around the skaters. Once again, the major feature of the game is the sophisticated controls, with this entry doubling the number of tricks over the previous entry, Skate It.
Several interesting releases on WiiWare this month: Family Glide Hockey brings the play mechanics first seen in WiiPlay Laser Hockey to its own game with multiple stages and up to four player simultaneous versus mode. Niki – Rock ‘n’ Ball is a retro-style platformer with little to no plot, but lots of jumping around and bopping enemies. In Planet Pachinko a family of robots is raiding a planet’s temples for treasure, and have to fight off pirates inside of giant pachinko boards.
The Icrontic spotlight falls on The Maw, which was just released on XBox Live. It received the Audience Choice Award at PAX10, and may also win at the Indie Games Fest. In this adventure/puzzle game, the player takes on the role of Frank, an apparent wrangler of a Kirby-like, attribute absorbing blob called The Maw. From early looks it appears to be a great testament to the power of the indie game developer.
