Nintendo announced this morning the long-awaited successor the the most successful handheld game console, the Nintendo DS. The new handheld, currently adorned with the temporary name of Nintendo 3DS, will once again feature two screens, be backward compatible with every Nintendo DS and DSi title, and will feature stereoscopic displays that will not require the user to wear polarized glasses. The device is expected to go on sale March of 2011.
Stereoscopy is sweeping all major facets of media. It is a bold move for Nintendo to implement the technology in their upcoming device, but not necessarily surprising. What is astonishing is the company’s intention to use stereo technology that will not require glasses. Polarized glasses seem to be the one final frontier preventing the 3D floodgates from opening and allowing the tech to be accepted by the masses. Nintendo could be leading the charage that pushes for the development of locally-polarized 3D devices.
Additional details on the Nintendo 3DS are vague at press time, but the company plans on revealing it all come the 2010 E3 Expo in Los Angeles.
