Today Nintendo announced a price drop on the Wii console to $149.99. The new price is for a bundle containing either a black or white Wii, Mario Kart, color matching Wii remote and Nunchuck, and the Mario Kart wheel accessory. This is clearly in anticipation of the impending launch of Project Café, the successor to the Wii, which will be formally announced and detailed this coming June. In addition to the new low cost on the console, they announced a new “Wii Select” games category—games that are now classic, reduced to $19.99 and considered must-have titles for the Wii. From the press release:
Also on May 15, Nintendo launches the new Nintendo® Selects collection of Wii games, a set of popular games that millions of people have already experienced, at a suggested retail price of $19.99. The four must-own games in this collection are The Legend of Zelda™: Twilight Princess, Animal Crossing™: City Folk, Mario™Super Sluggers and Wii Sports, which is available for the first time as a separate software purchase.
Of course, the looming question is: Will Café be fully backwards-compatible with Wii games and controllers? Signs point to “yes”, considering that their last generation of both handheld and primary consoles were both fully backwards-compatible, however, that’s not guaranteed. The second, less burning question concerns the release date of Café. If it’s early in 2012, there will be almost no point in buying into Wii at this time.
The real winners are those current Wii owners who never got to try Twilight Princess or Animal Crossing the first time around. $20 is a great price for either of those games.
