Hot on the heels of G.Skill’s announcement that they recently released a 24gb kit of DDR3 that hit the insane speed of 2ghz, OCZ released the news that 2ghz was scoff-worthy and revealed 4gb modules that operate at a blistering 2133 mhz.
We’re not sure how they’re hitting these speeds on high-density, low voltage RAM (all of these modules operate at 1.65v) but the fact that two module manufacturers are hitting these insane speeds tells us that it’s safe to say that someone in Taiwan cooked up a batch of really, really good chips.
Of course, recent process improvements from many memory chip manufacturers could have something to do with it. Samsung went 30nm in February, Elpida went to 40nm in April, and Hynix also went 40nm with a 256MB chip in November of ’09.
Memory this fast at these capacities can be a game-changer for both gamers and content creation specialists. No more sacrificing speed for high memory capacity.
Kits are now available in either 8GB dual channel or 12GB triple channel configurations from their Flex EX series. High density Reaper
and Platinum
series kits are also available, but they’re only running at a mere 2ghz.
