OCZ Technology announced yesterday the impending release of the Vertex 2 and Agility 2 SSDs, both of which are based on controller technology licensed from SandForce in November of last year.
“OCZ’s original Vertex Series of solid state drives have become a top seller due to the product’s exceptional performance and reliability,” said Ryan Petersen, CEO of OCZ Technology Group. “The new Vertex 2 and Agility 2 SSD lines continue that tradition by incorporating the latest controller and firmware technology.”
“They are an excellent solution for customers who are looking for improved transfer rates and best-in-class input/output per second (IOPS) for a wide range of uses, ranging from entertainment to workstation and tier 2 storage applications. Additionally, this new product line highlights our continuing determination to be the market leader in the high reliability memory and flash-based storage market.””
At the high end of the enthusiast scale, the Vertex 2 takes an uncompromising approach to random 4K reads–the single biggest impact on the speed and feel of an OS and applications–with up to 50,000 IOPS. That kind of performance is higher than the Intel X-25M G2, the current king of random 4K. Further, the excellent SandForce controller coupled with high quality NAND pushes the read and write speeds of the Vertex 2 to 285MBps and 275MBps, respectively.
The Agility 2, meanwhile, also offers 285/275MBps read/write speeds, but trends towards the value end of the enthusiast scale by trimming back the 4K random read IOPS to 10,000–a figure that’s still quite respectable.
Both the Agility 2 and Vertex 2 series will ship in 50GB, 100GB, 200GB and 400GB varieties in a few weeks, and all drives in both lineups will feature a SATA 3Gbps interface, as well as ATA TRIM support and a three-year warranty. Prices were not disclosed at the time of writing.
