After a short invite-only period, Palm has today released an open beta of the Palm Development Kit, which primarily gives developers access to the Palm Pre’s GPU hardware for the purpose of writing better games.
“It’s quite difficult to make a great phone that’s also an outstanding gaming platform; Palm has been successful delivering both,” said Baudouin Corman, vice president of publishing, Americas, Gameloft. “The Palm webOS PDK is extremely powerful and far-reaching, as evidenced by the number of titles we’ve been able to bring to the webOS platform in a very short time.”
The public release of the PDK will help to improve developer relations for the company, which has been sharply criticized for its restrictive approach to software development. The PDK will give developers the tools and low-level hardware access necessary to create graphically rich and compelling titles.
The new development kit is being released today at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco.
