Palm Pixi likely for Verizon

palm_pixiA suite of filings with the FCC published on Sunday reveal that the Palm Pixi has been re-certified by the FCC under the name “PIXEW.”

The link to Verizon is a little loose, but there is a quartet of points that do construct a fairly convincing case:

  • The FCC approved the Palm Pixi for use on the Sprint network long ago;
  • Devices do not need to undergo re-certification unless they are hopping carriers or undergoing hardware changes;
  • Verizon has recently undergone an about-face on its “no WiFi” policy, and the PIXEW has WiFi;
  • and the “Palm P121” appeared in Verizon’s database some months ago, and the PIXEW is also referred to as the P121 in FCC documentation.

The Pixi is Palm’s second Web OS device after the Palm Pre. Reduced in size and complexity from its bigger brother, the tablet-style handset offers QWERTY, a 2.6″ 320×400 touchscreen and a lighter weight. It is currently available exclusively on Sprint for $100 with two-year contract.

    MachineDog It still feels too late for Palm to get into the major smartphone game, but I'm sure a lot of people will be purchasing it who like the form factor but are not fans of Blackberry's OS. I like the OS, but I'm not sure this is a good thing as I'd like to see more users/Application support from Android.

    I'm actually beginning to hope this Nexus One is marketed heavily on TV by Google. Android really needs the kind of marketing presence that the iPhone has to get significant marketshare. The OS is a breeze to use, but I seriously doubt that many people even know it exists. Most people don't even know that the "Droid" is running Android, they just know of the Droid itself as a brand from the commercials.

Howdy, Stranger!
