Two phone hackers going by the names Caj2008 and Unixpsycho have announced a custom kernel for webOS 1.4.0 that boosts the Palm Pre’s clockspeed to 800MHz.
Though the kernel is “not ready for public distribution,” the duo has released a video that demonstrates the Pre’s snappiness with a 300MHz overclock. In the mean time, the developers have also released an 800MHz kernel for webOS 1.3.5.1, the second most recent version of the Palm Pre’s operating system.
While the pair’s various test subjects have not reported devastating consequences, they are nevertheless urging people to be mindful of excess heat.
Warning: If you have more than 1.0Gb of 3D games downloaded by the Palm app installer upon any OS update (or reset), put phone in airplane mode once in a while to cool it down (15 min cool/1 Gb installed). The continual download process imposed by Palm can potentially fry your phone at any frequency (depends whether you monitor temp or not). Note also that Mobile Hot Spot and other tether operations can warm up your phone so be careful when used in combination with other prolonged cpu intensive programs (give them a break once in a while, until below <35C). Use the temp monitor function in menu of the battery monitor app (preware, of course).
For those not ready to make the jump to 800Mhz, the enterprising devs have also released two kernels that feature more modest overclocks of 50 and 100MHz, respectively.
