Paramount’s new Star Trek game demo at E3 2011

Paramount is launching a new 3rd person co-op game set in the recently rebooted Star Trek universe. The game is not tied to the previous movie, nor the upcoming movie scheduled for release sometime in 2012.

New mechanics, weapons, and an interesting 2-player co-op system mean that this will probably be a pretty great game. The demo opens with a disabled Enterprise surrounded by strange energy streams of unknown origin. Kirk and Spock need to get to the ship from their shuttle, but can’t fly in and dock with the Enterprise. Queue a two minute space jump sequence, similar to what we saw in the 2009 movie, culminating in a daring crash landing in the shuttle bay door.

Something is very wrong on the Enterprise. The ship’s control systems have been disabled, and there are strange pods of alien technology scattered throughout the corridors of the ship. We come across a dead redshirt in one and scan him, finding an infection of unknown origin.

The tour progresses through the highly detailed models of the Enterprise. Bad Robot provided the actual 3D models of the Enterprise used in the movie.

The demo showed some interesting weapon-leveling and co-op mechanics. As your character progresses through the game, his weapons skill increases, allowing for more capabilities later on. The co-op updates were shown when Kirk’s character is partially disabled by enemy fire, and has to be helped along corridors by Spock. Kirk doesn’t just hang like a lump, however, he is able (and required) to take out additional enemies while being assisted.

The game is scheduled for release in 2012 (no firm date yet) for both console and PC.
