Penny Arcade charity brings in $1.4mil

cp_nodateThis was the sixth year of the Child’s Play charity, run by Tycho and Gabe of Penny Arcade, and touted as “The Gamers Charity”. As in all past years, it surpassed its previous best year. Last year, Child’s Play raised $1.3mil in toys, books, and money for children’s hospitals. As of the official closing of this year’s fundraising efforts (the charity only runs through the holidays), it had raised $1.4mil, and everything still hasn’t been counted yet, so that number could still rise further.

Starting as a toy-drive for one Seattle children’s hospital, Child’s Play asks gamers to band together and help bring toys, books, and other goods to children’s hospitals across the nation, bringing joy to an otherwise desperate place. Penny-Arcade teams up with Amazon each holiday season, allowing their readers and anyone else who cares to donate to purchase items from Amazon to be shipped directly to the hospitals. Every single year, this charity has seen growth, both in the number of donors and the number of hospitals which recieve the donations. Many seem to choose this as their holiday charity due to its simplicity and transparency.

Gate28 Great news! I always thought Child's Play had the right idea in doing a charity that could incorporate games and gamers.
