Popcap’s Plants vs. Zombies breaks App Store records

Within 24 hours of its release on the 15th of February this year, the iPhone / iPad adaptation of Plants vs. Zombies, Popcap’s popular lawn defense game, hit the number one spot on the App Store “Top Grossing” charts. Over the next nine days, it went on to sell over 300,ooo units—an App Store release record. At $2.99, the new version of the game has already grossed over $1 million. In addition, it has received 5 out of 5 stars from 95% of the purchasers, making it the highest rated product in the entire App Store library at present.

Originally released for the PC in May of 2009, Plants vs. Zombies tasks players with the defense of their yard and home through the growing of a variety of different plant types which each affect the attacking zombies in a different way. With its deceptively deep gameplay and humorous themes and artwork, it gained a fast following as a game that appeals to both the casual market and more experienced gamers.

This is the third Popcap game to reach the #1 sales position on the App Store charts, following Bejeweled and Peggle. The two other Popcap games in the App Store, Book Worm and Chuzzle have remained consistently in the top 100.
