Business users across the globe virtually depend upon Research in Motion’s BlackBerry devices for connectivity. As the company attempts to branch into the consumer space, however, its stodgy corporate roots have somewhat hampered its growth amongst those likely to buy smartphones. The primary concern, most say, is the company’s browser, which is widely considered to be one of the worst in the smartphone industry. With sluggish page loads and poor rendering, the RIM browser quite simply pales in comparison to the iPhone or Android, but that may not be true for long.
Today RIM demonstrated a browser built on WebKit, the very same engine used by the iPhone, Pre and Android to render pages. Likely based on technology sourced by the company’s acquisition of Torch Mobile, the demonstration video below shows rendering speed and accuracy never before seen on BlackBerry devices.
Though it is not known when the software upgrade will hit consumer’s handsets, we’d guess some time within the next four months wouldn’t be entirely out of the question.
