Apogee today announced that a port of the classic PC game, Rise of the Triad will be coming to iPhone and iPad. The groundbreaking FPS will be downloadable from the app store sometime this quarter. The port is being crafted by Mobila Interactive, who specialize in this sort of work.
Rise of the Triad, originally released in 1995, was a major step forward for the FPS genre, introducing many of the features that modern gamers take for granted, like true multi-elevation environments, the ability to look up and down, jumping, and dynamic death-scenes.
Originally produced as an expansion pack for Wolfenstien 3D, it was decided to give the original Wolf3d engine an overhaul after the commercial success of DOOM, and release RotT as a standalone game. Looking at it from a historical perspective, the game is a strange mix of old and new mechanics, as—in addition to the advances listed above—it was the last major release to use an engine that was limited by all right-angle walls and static floor/ceiling elevations.
“We are very honored to be working with industry pioneer like Apogee Software to bring this groundbreaking game from the 90’s to platforms of the 21nd century,” said Yevegeniy Goyfman, co-founder of Mobilia Interactive. “It is exciting to be a major part of re-introducing classics like Rise of the Triad and allowing fans to re-live the experience, as well as share these true entertainment treasures with a new generation of gamers.”
This may be only the first step in a move to re-popularize the Rise of the Triad franchise, as there are unconfirmed rumors of a modern RotT reboot in production.
