French-language tech site PC INpact has today published a story indicating that Intel is preparing to officially release a dual core Atom CPU for netbooks, the N500.
Nothing is known about the CPU, but the timing of its possible introduction all but confirms that it will be based on Intel’s new Pineview architecture. If that is true, the chip will feature an on-die GPU, an integrated memory controller, Hyper-Threading and support for up to 2GB of DDR2 memory.
The Atom N500 will not be the first dual core Atom to find its way into netbooks, however. Manufacturers have already taken to using the nettop-oriented Atom 330 in designs like the Asus EeePC 1201N. Whereas the Atom 330 is based on Intel’s older Diamondville design, the N500 would enable manufacturers to design dual core netbooks based on the company’s new Pineview architecture.
