A rumor coming out of the Android and Me blog alleges that all Android handsets in the United States will be receiving an update to Android 2.1 in the coming months.
“After talking with several inside sources familiar with the matter, I would like to report that every Android phone currently released in the United States will be receiving an upgrade to Android 2.1,” writes Android and Me founder Taylor Wimberly.
Not all updates will be conducted OTA, however, as some carriers will prefer the higher reliability of a PC-based update, which allows the update to flash the handset’s boot loader (if necessary) and create a backup of the old configuration. Wimberly notes that carriers and phone makers are still in the process of qualifying and deciding upon a final update method.
The update won’t be a completely smooth transition for all users, however, as many devices cannot port user data through the upgrade and will require a factory reset. Which phones will require this is not clear at this time.
Wimberly concludes by saying that most Android 2.1 updates are on track for 2Q10, with the T-Mobile G1 and MyTouch being amongst the initial eligible first-gen devices.
