[Rumor] HTC Desire to AT&T, Legend to Sprint

An unconfirmed rumor out of BoyGeniusReport suggests that the recently-announced HTC Desire and HTC Legend will be headed to AT&T and Sprint, respectively.

Speaking to BGR on the condition of anonymity, a source purported by the outlet to be reliable has said that the HTC Desire will be compatible with AT&T’s 1900MHz 3G network, and will be sold on subsidy. Said to be taking the “Desire” name at retail, their source contends that it may receive some minor cosmetic changes before it launches in the May-June time slot against an AT&T-ready Nexus One, which Google is preparing for direct-to-consumer sales.

Moving to the Sprint camp, the same source close to HTC said that the Legend will take up the “Hero 2” banner when it launches, though no timetable was made available. Like the original Sprint Hero, which underwent substantial changes to device’s appearance with respect to the OEM design, their source concluded by saying that the Hero 2 may have the same fate.

The HTC Desire

Previously regarded as the Bravo or Passion (its alternative codename is the Bravo), the device is made in the spitting image of the Nexus One at a hardware level. With a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon, 576MB RAM, 512MB ROM and the same 3.7″/480×800 AMOLED display, the similarities are uncanny.

The two devices depart, however, on the subject of cursor control: The Desire has dropped the trackball in favor of an optical trackpad. The Desire also breaks rank when it comes to software, as the handset features Adobe Flash 10.1, and has declined Google Experience status in favor of a brand new version of the Sense UI.

Other specs include:

  • Android 2.1;
  • 5MP camera;
  • 1400mAh battery;
  • Bluetooth 2.1+EDR;
  • FM radio;
  • GPS and A-GPS;
  • 802.11b/g WiFi;
  • 3.5mm” stereo jack and MicroUSB;
  • MicroSD support up to 32GB;
  • and dimensions of 2.36″ x 4.7″ x .47″ (W x H x D).

HTC has announced broad availability on European and Asian carriers, as well as in Australia via Telstra. Its destiny in the US remains unconfirmed, despite today’s reports.

The HTC Legend

Featuring virtually identical dimensions to its predecessor (.01″ wider, .12″ thinner), the HTC Legend is otherwise made in the Hero’s very image. There are notable improvements in the design, however. Instead of a plastic chassis as with the Hero, the Legend comes with an aluminum shell. And instead of an LCD, the Legend trims thickness with a 3.2″/320×480 AMOLED display.

Other hardware has been improved as well. The Legend kicks the processor speed from 528MHz to 600MHz, likely through a superior SoC (likely the Qualcomm MSM7627) that will enhance performance beyond frequency alone. The Legend also improves device RAM from 288MB to 384MB, which should further improve performance over the Hero. And finally, cursor positioning has been improved with an optical trackpad.

Other specs include:

  • Android 2.1 with HTC Sense UI;
  • 1300mAh battery;
  • MicroSD up to 32GB;
  • 3.5mm stereo jack;
  • MicroUSB;
  • 802.11b/g;
  • FM radio;
  • Bluetooth 2.1+EDR;
  • and dimensions of 2.22″ x 4.41″ x .45″ (W x H x D).

The device has been confirmed for Europe and Asia in 2Q 2010, and will likely make it to the US during the July-September time frame.
