Samsung Behold II: no Android 2.0+

Samsung Behold II: no Android 2.0+

Samsung made waves during its launch of the Behold II by announcing that the handset would make the jump to Android 2.0+ when the software became available. Many customers bought into the phone based on this promise, but they have since grown frustrated, as the handset remains on the rather august Android 1.5 nearly seven months after its debut. With Android 2.0, 2.1 and 2.2 out the door, the situation for Behold II owners just got worse: the phone is being upgraded Android 1.6, where it shall remain forever.

An official Samsung update on the matter seals the Behold II’s fate:

Samsung Mobile and T-Mobile USA are planning to update the Behold II to Android 1.6 which provides access to Google Maps Navigation, Google Voice Search capability and quick search box for Android. The update will also supply additional benefits including Swype, an improved Media Player, updated core Android applications and improved Bluetooth capabilities. However, the Behold II is not upgradeable beyond Android 1.6.

Outraged users are advised to file their complaints with Samsung’s official Twitter account, @SamsungMobileUS, or by phone and email.

QCH WOW... I sure hope Samsung changes their mind. I'd hate to buy something with the promise of something more coming free and then be told "no lucky, sorry".
  2. Ryan I am a behold 2 owner and very very upset about this news. If I would have had this knowledge seven months ago I would have chose a differnt phone.

QCH I ALMOST went with the Behold instead of the Motorola Cliq. Seeing that I am still waiting for Android v2.0...
  4. James The exact reason why I bought a Nexus One (though viewed as a failure by some) I know it will be the first to be upgraded.

ardichoke I'm not all that surprised by this. Samsung hasn't exactly been a stellar provider of Android handsets. Just look at the Galaxy, promising hardware which they never brought to the US and let stagnate on the software front. Just seems to me that Samsung doesn't much care about updating the software on their phones.
