CES 2011 is in full swing and many amazing announcements have been popping up. So far, much of the news has been tablet heavy. That did not, however, stop Samsung from making a major announcement at CES.
Boo-Keun Yoon came out swinging, talking about how the Samsung Galaxy Beam was used for the famously stranded Chilean miners so they were able to keep in touch with their families. BK Yoon went on say that in 2 years we went from what he termed ‘Digital Humanism’ to ‘Human Digitalism’. Human Digitalism will have four parts, which Samsung call the Four A’s:
- Access—Communicate freely and share experiences through networked products
- Align—Experience comfort through natural multisensory design and the user experience
- Amaze—Create a new dimension of enjoyment through completely immersive viewing experiences
- Act—Fulfill our duty as responsible citizens to keep our planet healthy
BK then announced that Samsung will be teaming up with “influential partners” Comcast and Time Warner, and at that point Comcast CEO Brian Roberts and Time Warner CEO Glenn Britt came out to join BK. Brian went on to talk about the Xfinity app that will allow you watch your shows on TV, tablet and smart phone. Then it was Glenn’s turn to show off the TWC app by accessing live TV directly on the tablet or Samsung Smart TV. You can also watch any shows you have recorded on any DVR that you have in your home.
When they were showing this portion of the keynote, I was really impressed by what they were showing. With how quickly the shows were coming up on the television, they must’ve been using a direct connection. And, dang it Glenn, why didn’t you keep ESPN up? I needed my sports fix for the day.
After Brian and Glenn left the stage, BK then announced another partner that will be teaming up with Samsung. Hulu CEO Jason Kilar came out to announce that Hulu Plus will be coming soon to Android devices like the Samsung Galaxy S tablet. Next up was CEO Shantanu Narayen, who came out to announce that Samsung products will have Adobe Air and will support Adobe Flash which includes Tablets and TVs. Later Dreamworks CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg came out to give his opinion about the 3D industry.
Jeffrey made a bold statement: “When it comes to 3D in the homes, there is Samsung and then there is everyone else. Samsung saw the future first and has been leading the way ever since.” That was a nice jab at Sony, LG, Mitsubishi, and Toshiba. Afterwards, Jeffrey put on a pair of 3D glasses, but they were prescription glasses! Even though they are still 3D glasses, you do not have to worry about whether or not the 3D glasses will fit over your own glasses. BK then announced that they are launching the world’s first 3D audio system for home entertainment systems later this year.
Overall Samsung is really focusing on Smart TVs along with continuing to make improvements on their 3D TV line—yet only time will tell whether or not it will be worth investing in this new technology.
