SanDisk and Toshiba clip production

NAND manufacturing partners Toshiba and SanDisk have recently revealed that they intend to cut production of NAND flash modules.

Blaming a depressed global economy and a soft demand for NAND, jointly-owned Fab 3 and Fab 4 plants Yokkaichi, Japan will be closed December 31 – January 12. Upon reopening, both fabs will have their production reduced by approximately 30%. The firms are also confirming that older fabs using smaller wafers will also be closed for a period of four days towards the end of the year.

While these maneuvers will increase the cost of production, both firms must do this so as to avoid further deflation in the cost of NAND.
