Skype today has introduced a beta client for select phones running the Symbian OS. According to Skype, this early version is being used to gather feedback for a broader release to come at a later date.
The beta enables users to make VoIP calls using Skype’s proprietary protocol. Features offered by the beta include: Skype-to-Skype calling, call receiving via the user’s Skype number, Skype-to-POTS service, instant messaging, group conversations and file transfers. Video calling is not, however, included.
The Skype for Symbian Beta is compatible with Nokia’s S60 Feature Pack 1 (3.1) and Feature Pack 2 (3.2) devices, which includes handsets like the N95, N82, N79 and N96. Skype additionally advises that users to install the client to the device’s main memory, not expanded storage such as a memory card; the application requires approximately 6MB of free space.

This beta release of Skype for Symbian supports more than ten different handsets, with the production release planned to be compatible with even more phones.
Skype for Symbian supports:
- Free Skype-to-Skype calling
- Call phones with Skype credits or subscription
- Receive calls on your Online Number
- Instant Messaging
- Group conversations
- File sending and receiving
Skype for Symbian works over Wifi or 3G data connection. We recommend having a unlimited data plan when using 3G connection.
