StarCraft II Heart of the Swarm changes

You can Pre-order StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm now.

Here are some of the changes  that Blizzard wants to do with the new expansion for StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm. They took away Carriers and the Mothership to make way for some of the new units for the Protoss. That makes me sad, because I like to Mothership rush some people. It does not work like it did when the game first came out but it is still fun. RIP Mothership. You were fun to play while you were here.

Terrans

Issues and weaknesses

  •  Thor is too slow and clumsy
  • Race has difficulties in handling mass zealots in late game

New units and abilities

  • New “battle mode” for hellion – transforms like a viking
  • Battle mode hellion has more hit points, moves more slowly
  • Shorter, wider arc on flame attack, and stronger
  • Gives terran a beefy front-line fighter in the late game

Warhound

  • Smaller, more nimble version of Thor
  • Effective anti-mech ground weapon to help break siege tank lines
  • Anti-air attack with splash damage

Shredder

  • Robot that emits channeled, area of effect damage when immobilized
  • Damage automatically shuts off when an ally moves into range
  • Gives terran cheap zone control, but can’t be used near main army
  • Is still very work-in-progress

Thor

  • Moved to late game, more hit points and damage
  • Can only have one, like mothership from Wings of Liberty

Zerg

Issues and weaknesses

  • Mid-game difficulties with siege and controlling areas
  • Missed opportunities with certain units like ultralisk and corruptor

New units and abilities

Ultralisk

  • Existing version is bulky and has difficulties engaging in battle
  • New burrow charge ability lets it dive underground and get into the fight easily

Viper

  • New caster unit with detection — replaces overseer
  • Has abilities like blinding cloud to help break entrenched positions
  • Abduct ability allows it to pull units to itself — pull siege tanks or colossus out of death balls

Swarm host

  • Zerg artillery for map control and siege
  • Burrows into the ground, and continuously generates small creatures to attack
  • Feels very zerg-y

Protoss

Issues and weaknesses

  • Needs more raiding options
  • Needs area of effect, anti-air attacks

New units and abilities

Tempest

  • New protoss capital ship, replaces carrier
  • Anti-air splash damage for mutalisks and other aircraft
  • Has direct air-to-ground attack as well that isn’t splash

Replicant

  • Special unit that can clone itself into any non-massive unit
  • Allows protoss to also take siege tanks or infestors from enemies
  • Is very expensive
  • Still very much a work-in-progress, not-final unit

Oracle

  • Caster unit used for raiding and harassment
  • Can disable enemy structures, or prevent miningwith its abilities
  • Doesn’t actually kill or damage anything
  • Mothership is cut in favor of this unit

fatcat ah, 2/3 of the way to a complete game

I sit and wait for Starcraft II Battlechest
  3. Winfrey
Winfrey Zerg got some cool units, Protoss got some cool new abilities, Terran got more ridic.

    plus: burrow. move. banelings.
  4. Koreish
Koreish I'm confused Blizzard said that Protoss didn't have good anti air AoE which is why the tempest was introduced. Then what was Psi-Storm? It was kind of an everything AoE.

And no Carrier? Rather than just take it out why couldn't they just fix it?

Last Question why is the Reaper a zerg unit now? It autoheals outside of battle is one of the quickest / most mobile units and has that hit and run style that fits the Zerg lore.

fatcat When are we getting Warcraft IV?

  7. Tim
Tim Zerg is getting a zergling version that can hop over walls like reapers, I saw a demo of it on the Blizzcon HD internet stream, and I don't like it, as that sort of thing should be for my reapers only.
  8. Koreish
Koreish Tim that was single player only. The Reddit list I posted was all the multiplayer changes.
  9. storrm i never remember seeing any mass zealots in late game powning Terrans. i like the idea of the Replicant, cant wait to see a Protoss make an SCV and make PF every wear late game.
  10. Tim
Tim I hope this Protoss ability to use replicants to build copies of my units is included in their supply count, so if they decide to copy all my stuff, they cannot build as many of their own normal Protoss units.
  11. TheAlertHusky I'm liking some of the changes. And I concur with fatcat. I'm waiting for the battlechest.

I'm guessing it's gonna work the same way as when you mindjack an enemy builder with Zerg. Each race that a player controls has their own supply count, effectively doubling/tripling the potential size of their army.
  13. Koreish
Koreish It only replicates what you have vision of. Sure you can Replicate a worker if you want for the cost of 4 supply but you can't access their tech tree. The only reason you can with an Infestor is because it isn't your unit technically. I honestly wouldn't be to worried about Protoss getting access to your tech tree and just building your units for the actual cost of your supply Tim. If they wanted it so badly they would just switch to your race.

I see the replicant as more of a way help Protoss break Terran Seige lines and Ghosts EMP carpet bombing, or Infestor, Broodlord combos more than anything. And again remember that the Replicant is costing the Protoss double what most other units in the game cost.

shwaip I'm interested to see what actually makes it into the final MP version.

    RE stealing workers:

    1) stealing a worker as Z doesn't give you 2x the supply cap, it still counts towards your 200 max - it'll be the same for P, I'm sure
    2) Definitely worth it to clone an scv and make your 3rd and later bases be orbital commands.

Or, if it's in a vulnerable position, a Planetary Fortress.

My apologies, you're correct, I was thinking back to the olden days of Brood War.
  17. Koreish
Koreish So according to Dustin Browder you can replicate a worker and build structures of the other races as if you were that race, as it stands now. Him and David Kim don't seem to think that it would be a big issue with the exception of Protoss easily gaining access to MULES and Scan. Browder went on to say that it would be an easy fix that you wouldn't be able to replicate workers if they find it becomes to common place.

Fun new strategy Terrans will be getting. We'll be able to load a medivac full of shredders and drop them off in opponent mineral lines. It's known that they're a cheap unit and from the looks of the video they deploy pretty quick. We could kill workers as fast as Psi-Storm and almost as fast as Fungal without even having to tech hard to do it. Yay!!! Terran Imba!!!
  18. shwaip
shwaip heh, mules and scan are so good that protoss shouldn't be allowed to have them.
