Still alive: Valve teases fans with Portal mystery

Valve appears to be making gamers work for new details on Portal 2/Half-Life Episode 3, hinted at by a recent update that added a strange achievement about a mysterious transmission.

Gamers are also finding clock-radios in strange places throughout Portal; the radios now make sound, rather than catchy muzak, and flip their LED to green when taken to specific parts of the map.

Sleuths on the Steam Forums are already digging through the added sound files and found that some of them are coded images when viewed properly.

We can only guess what any of these details could mean at this point, but it’s clear that something exciting is brewing.

primesuspect Announcing a sequel (or other news) by adding content to an old game is such a freaking cool idea.
  2. RyanMM
RyanMM Encoding images in audio even more so. I'm flabbergasted.
  3. UPSLynx
UPSLynx I'm astonished at how much work some of the players on the steam forums are putting into deciphering this.

I saw a nice de-noised image collection on the Internet Hate Machine that showed all the Portal teaser images quite clearly. Of course, I'm an idiot and didn't save it. Seems like Portal 2 will have walking turret mech things, and lots of spheres rather than cubes...

Or, conversely, perhaps a combine super soldier teaser from Episode 3.

Snarkasm The things they're doing here are phenomenal. Hiding the telnet number to a BBS?

God, I love Valve. I'm about 20 pages through the currently 110-page Steam thread.
  13. Zadok
Zadok I got the 'Transmision Recived' achievement last night. Now I just need to find a good brake-down of what the messages said as I'm not good at code cracking. The ACM Reflections and Projections conference's PuzzleCrack competition always intrigued me but I could never get past even the first day.
  14. UPSLynx
UPSLynx PuzzleCrack was always so far beyond me. Dat logic stuff man, dat logic. It's why I stick to graphics.

Telnet number to a BBS? Holy crap, that's really impressive!

I can't believe the layers of depth in all of this.
