The SSD world is starting to look like a battle royale, a cage match of epic proportions. There are literally dozens of choices when it comes to putting an SSD in your computer these days. Being that there are only a few controller vendors and NAND manufacturers, each particular model is a pick-and-choose of which controller and which NAND manufacturer you prefer.
Today Strontium announced their new HAWK SSD line, which pairs the SandForce SF2281 controller with SK Hynix NAND. As with most SF 2281 drives, Strontium claims top ends of 510MB/s reads and 470MB/s writes for sequential perforamnce, as well as 50,000 IOPS read and 38,000 IOPS write for random performance.
The Strontium HAWK SSD is available in 120gb and 240gb capacities, with the 120gb driving coming in at an even $100 and the 240gb coming in at $200 directly from their e-shop. Both drives come with a three year limited warranty.
Whether or not you choose Strontium, at these prices there really is no excuse to ever buy a mechanical HD for your system/boot drive any more. The real story is that 120gb SSDs are now $100 and less, and adding an SSD to your system is probably the single most significant upgrade you can make to a computer (particularly laptops, which are normally hobbled with slower-than-average hard drives).
