Enterprise box builder Sun Microsystems and US memory maker Micron have come together to extend enterprise NAND’s tolerance before failure out to one million write/erase cycles.
The new technology is an enhancement to the SLC NAND cell process, and it has made them more reliable than ever. While the process can also be applied to MLC cells to boost their life to 100k cycles, enterprise is going to balk at that number. A Micron spokesperson was smart to remind that this new technique is divorced from the controller, meaning the magic is in the chips themselves. “It’s a NAND-based technology; controllers are not included in this package. … it can be extended to [2-bit] MLC flash, which will achieve 100K write cycles,” they said.
It appears that this an entirely Micron-created product, meaning that Intel, Hitachi GST and Hitachi Data Systems won’t immediately — if ever — feature the tech. Meanwhile, production on the new chips for sundry gizmos will begin in 1Q09 to flutter of enterprise’s heart. Awww.
