Super Mario Crossover is a retro nerd’s dream come true

Super Mario Crossover is a retro nerd’s dream come true

The internet has once again made the impossible possible. Thanks to Newgrounds, we can now see how Super Mario Bros would play with characters other than Mario. Super Mario Crossover is what every gamer that grew up in the NES era has always wanted to do—shoot King Koopa with the spread shot from Contra.

Super Mario Crossover plays exactly as the original Super Mario Bros did, but adds one important new element: You can select to play as either Mario, Link from The Legend of Zelda, Bill Rizer from Contra, Simon Belmont from Castlevania, Mega Man, or Samus Aran from Metroid. Each character plays exactly as they did in their original games, and the each introduce different elements to the game. For instance, Mega Man can fire his Mega Buster (which will charge once you powerup with a mushroom), and he can also slide. Samus can go into morph ball and lay bombs. Bill can fire in all directions while running and jumping.

This is the greatest character selection screen of all time

Unfortunately, pixel-perfect recreations of these characters also means that their frustrating bits have been carried over as well. Remember how rage-worthy jumping was in Castlevania? Playing as Simon Belmont in this game will still make you want to punch a hole in the wall.

To sweeten the deal, the music for each level changes to reflect the character you’re playing as. Castlevania’s legendary Stage 1 theme fills the air as you whip goombas, the nostalgic Hyrule overworld theme plays as Link stabs a Koopa Troopa, and the iconic “PEW PEW PEW” sound plays when you die as Mega Man.

Head over to Newgrounds and play Super Mario Crossover to make all of your childhood dreams come true. (except for wanting to play for the Yankees or having a Pony, you’ll have to work for those on your own).
