Swissdisk system failures hose customer data

Mere weeks after serious failures in cloud services for T-Mobile’s Sidekick, the US-based Swissdisk backup service is experiencing severe issues as well.

Customer access issues arose as recently as October 18 when Swissdisk emailed customers citing, “unplanned and unforeseen catastrophic hardware failure caused by multiple simultaneous events.”

Whether or not users will eventually regain access to their data is currently unclear, but Swissdisk’s October 18 statement ominously indicates that customers will have to re-register as a result of the outage. Given this, it seems unlikely that users will be able to recover their current data from Swissdisk.

With customer data hanging in the balance, the firm has not yet offered updated comment via its website or by email.

RyanMM This is why I don't believe online backup will ever be anything but a supplement to a good local daily differential disk backup. Acronis TrueImage FTW.

    ardichoke To misquote TS Eliot:

This is the way the cloud ends
Not with a bang but a whimper

Could computing is a great idea when coupled with cheap low power devices like netbooks, but when you can't trust companies to have redundant systems and keep them properly maintained, cloud computing will go the way of the dodo.

.... SwissDisk has recently released our new Multi-User feature. This paid feature allows a account holder to create a folder and assign a unique password to that folder. The account holder can also create a folder named "Shared" that will allow all sub-account users to share files. For more information please see the Multi-User tab at the top right of your My SwissDisk page. Also note, the SwissDisk site graphics, etc will be updated very soon. Thank you for sharing your blog, we appreciate honest web reporting and views.
