Where were you when TF2 turned 119? Team Fortress 2 has seen 119 game updates since its release with the Orange Box way back in October of 2007. That 119 may seem like an insignificant number, but Valve Software sees it as a reason to celebrate. To commemorate this joyous occasion, the TF2 team has posted a lengthy blog post that champions long-time players with freebies, details some fun statistics on the game and displays every single change log for TF2 since its release.
To thank the players for their years of service, the post unveils three different medals that will be given out to all players. These medals will be wearable in game, much like the solider medal given out a year ago. The first medal, titled “Grizzled Veteran”, is gold in color and will only be given to those that first played TF2 within the first three months of release. The second medal, colored silver and named “Solider of Fortune”, will be given to all players who first started playing between three months to one year of the game’s release. The final medal, sporting a bronze color and the name of “Weekend Warrior”, will be given to everyone else.
The rest of the post is full of all sorts of fun information on Team Fortress 2. Not only are there miscellaneous statistics on the game, but you can also take a trip down memory lane by scrolling through the entire history of changes and updates made to the game back to day one. The list is massive, and practically made me tear up with nostalgia. 2007 was a long time ago, and feels like a different lifetime by now, but I remember very vividly when the June 2008 updates were released during the Icrontic LAN. We crowded around screens to read the changelog with the Pyro update as everyone hurriedly updated their copies.
The final announcement made on the TF2 blog concerned the Heavy. Valve has teamed up with The IP Factory to create a limited number of TF2 Heavy figurines. They will be 12 inches tall and come in both Blu and Red variants. Pre-orders will begin May 3rd on Gamingheads, so if you want one of these limited edition figures, be prepared to get in line.
As you might expect, the post is full of the typical Valve humor. Not only do they poke fun at themselves for getting trapped in Valve Time for a few weeks, but they also give themselves props with this humorous bit:
For the record, you couldn’t have done it without us either… Without us you’d still be running around in de_dust. Just sayin’…
Never change, Valve. Never change.
