.tel joins the list of TLDs

.tel joins the list of TLDs

London-based Telnic hopes that their new .tel domain will spur the stagnant TLD market by offering an innovative service that brings the idea behind the phone book onto the web.

Rather than storing information on a static page, information entered for a .tel domain will be stored using the framework of the existing DNS system. This means that owners of a .tel domain will not need page design experience, and users of .tel domains will always receive the same experience.

While the system seems relatively abstract, Telnic is offering a .tel simulator which clarifies how the system works and is presented. Telnic hopes that the service’s simplicity will help approach the ubiquity of the common phone book.

While .tel registrations are currently available to businesses for 280 quid, it will later become accessible to the general public for just 15 a year.

Our take: Hopefully it will be as successful as the .mobi doma– wait…
