Capcom’s “vs.” 2D fighter series has a long and storied history. Considered by some to be the ultimate in cross-IP fan service, Capcom has always been able to pull licensing coups and get some amazing unrelated properties together into video games, all for the sake of beating the crap out of each other. As children, never did we imagine we would be able to pit Spiderman against Mega Man, or Wolverine against Strider, but Capcom made those things happen for us.
One of their most popular “vs.” games was Marvel vs. Capcom—so much so that they made a sequel that was originally released for Dreamcast and is now available on Xbox Live Arcade.
Apparently it did well—Capcom today announced Marvel vs. Capcom 3, for Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 for release in Spring of 2011.
A new engine will be powering the fighter; the MT Framework used in Lost Planet 2 and Resident Evil 4 will support “moving comic” style line drawings. According to the press release, the new engine and art style will “blur the lines between 2D and 3D graphics”. The familiar 3-man team mechanic will remain in place. Players will build teams of 3 fighters to take on either AI or human opponents, providing endless opportunities for tweaking your strategy and creating over-the-top aerial and ground combos. MvC has always been known for the extremely wild combos, and version 3 promises to deliver more of the same.
The teaser trailer was revealed at the Captivate ’10 conference:
