The Internet in the running for the Nobel Peace Prize

The Internet has been nominated for this year’s Nobel Peace Prize, along with a record 237 other individuals or organizations.

Nominations can be submitted by former winners, national government members and some university professors. The Internet’s nomination is backed by 2003 winner, Shirin Ebadi.

The final list was reduced from thousands of initial nominations by the Norwegian Nobel committee, who will announce the winner on October 8. This year’s winner will receive about the same monetary amount as last year, $1.4 million, which went to U.S. President Barack Obama.

It is unknown who would accept the award and money if the Internet won. One group, Internet for Peace, claims that a win for the Internet would be “a Nobel for each and every one of us.”

CB Wouldn't Al Gore get it?
  2. MAGIC
MAGIC The money should be equally distributed between all users of the internet, and we should all be recognized as winners. It's going on my resume either way.

The real question is what are YOU going to spend your 0.09th of a Penny on?

I'll use mine for CB's cheap Al Gore comment.....

  4. Garg
Garg Al Gore already has one. Or, is it half of one? Would this mean he'd be the first two-time (1.5) winner?
  5. Small Ivory Knight Wow... Giving it to the internet, by extrapolation, means we're giving it to 4chan.
  6. DrLiam
DrLiam Hahaha! 4chan winning a peace prize! I think that's the final sign that the Apocalypse is upon us.
  7. NiGHTS
NiGHTS I'm glad Italy's apparently fully invested in seeing this occur.

...y'know, the country that just upheld the idea that seemingly random employees that happen to work for a company with a presence on the internet are held liable for messages they themselves have not posted, seen, or are even aware of?

Stay classy, Italy, continue to champion human rights and their great successes on the internet.

Howdy, Stranger!
