The Internet has been nominated for this year’s Nobel Peace Prize, along with a record 237 other individuals or organizations.
Nominations can be submitted by former winners, national government members and some university professors. The Internet’s nomination is backed by 2003 winner, Shirin Ebadi.
The final list was reduced from thousands of initial nominations by the Norwegian Nobel committee, who will announce the winner on October 8. This year’s winner will receive about the same monetary amount as last year, $1.4 million, which went to U.S. President Barack Obama.
It is unknown who would accept the award and money if the Internet won. One group, Internet for Peace, claims that a win for the Internet would be “a Nobel for each and every one of us.”
