The Road to Wrestlemania is real. What WWE 12 brings to the ring.

The Road to Wrestlemania is real. What WWE 12 brings to the ring.

WWE 12

The WWE games in recent memory have been less than stellar—unlike their real life counter-part. In my humble opinion the last good WWE game was Wrestlemania 64 for the Nintendo 64. Yes, I am being brutally honest because I have been in the ring telling a story to the crowd, taking the bumps and bruises. That is, until last year when THQ released the series-ending Smackdown vs. Raw 11, where they focus on the Road to Wrestlemania. Every kid who has ever been a wrestling fan has always dreamed of headlining in Wrestlemania, myself included.

What plans does THQ have for the upcoming WWE 12: Road to Wrestlemania? A more isolated storyline when you choose to be play as either the Villain (Heel), Hero (Face), or Outsider. No longer will you playing inside a three month widow, but instead you will be going through an 18 month window that should last around 10-12 hours of gameplay.

Road to Wrestlemania 001

From what I am reading about the actual storyline for WWE 12, it’s a wonder that Vince McMahon has not hired the writers for the game to write for Raw and Smackdown. For the first part of the storyline, you play as Shamus, as he is dubbed as the ‘Celtic Warrior’—a Villian who forms a power group with most of the European wrestlers; William Regal, Drew McIntrye, and Wade Barrett. I would love to see this group in the actual shows and see how they would run in both Raw and Smackdown.

Road to Wrestlemania 002

The second part of the story, you play as an Outsider with Triple H, the most recognize named in the game and 13-time Champion. Triple H is feuding with several wrestlers that include The Miz and the recently retired Edge.  There is not much information about what else Triple H is doing in the game. To be honest, I would rather see someone else to play the role as Outsider. Even though the choices are limited, there are guys like CM Punk or Chris Jericho that could play the role better than Triple H.

Road to Wrestlemania 003

I am just glad the Hero (Face) role is you, the player. How will you get to Wrestlemania? Will you be like Evan Bourne and fly all over the place or will you be like The Rock and electrify the crowd by your presence alone.

Whether you are a wrestling fan or not, WWE 12 is shaping up to be one hell of a game to pick up. I cannot wait to pick this game up and play the story mode.  WWE 12: Road to Wrestlemania is slated to be released on November 22, 2011.

Here comes the PAIN! Brock Lesnar!

Gate28 I think BioWare should make a pro wrestling game. A pro wrestling game that long, interesting and lets you develop a character of your own would be a game worth buying.

Chooch That would be a great idea to pitch to BioWare. Maybe I will ask them that the next time I talk to a BioWare rep.

Cliff_Forster Oh hell, I'll let everyone in on my dark secret..... From time to time, when nobody is looking, I'll watch a little pro wrestling. I know, I know, it's not cool, or hip, or maybe its even a little undignified, but I've always viewed it as performance art. It's an athletic ballet that appeals to our innermost fantasy to kick the hell out of all that oppose us. I loved it when I was a kid, and for a few years I watched every single promotion religiously and got to a live show from time to time. As an adult I'll very casually flip around on the remote some nights and if I see it, I'll watch a few minutes. When it's done right, it can still be tremendously entertaining.

Generally wrestling video games are pretty enjoyable, at least the last ones I played on the N64 and PS2 were. There are a couple different approaches. Sometimes its more arcade, punching, kicking, some easy grapples, lots of button mashing. Those are fun, but some of my old favorites were games that let you create a character from scratch and run him up the ladder, that appears to be the hook for WWE12. A good create a character session can take over an hour customizing everything from his ring gear, to his entire move set, to how he enters the ring, it's a joy to put together, in many cases its the best part of the game. Any fighting game fan that may be tired of playing Capcom or Namco's latest, give this a shot, you will be surprised at how deep and strategic it can be, especially when creating your own character.
