The Whispered World: a return to imaginative PC adventures

Whispered World feature banner

Remember the days of highly creative point-and-click adventure games for the PC? Games such as the classic of classics, Myst. Or perhaps more whimsical games such as the Secret of Monkey Island? A game that you could sit down alongside your mom or dad with and cheerfully roll through, bouncing between adventuring and solving mind-bending puzzles.

Those days didn’t have to die. Daedalic Entertainment is pleased to bring you a new chapter in point-and-click adventure games by bringing us the gorgeously hand-painted The Whispered World. The game brings the essence of its predecessors, complete with traditionally animated cutscenes and imagination reminiscent of Don Bluth films or The Dark Crystal.

And the best part? The game is now available today.

Sadwick with crowbar

Sadwick holding a familiar iconic weapon

The Whispered World is the story of Sadwick, a young clown that is often anything but cheerful. His life generally unremarkable as he lives with his circus family. He is visited in a dream by a mysterious blue creature. He is given a message and urged to leave his world behind and venture forth to the Autumn Forest, where a haunting prophecy lies in wait. The stakes at hand is the continued existence of the Earth itself.

During his adventures, Sadwick will be able to explore amazing new landscapes in the Autumn Forest and beyond. He will be able to interact with highly animated locals, and will come face-to-face with marvelous, gigantic creatures. The land has a character onto itself, with rolling meadows to dripping caverns—all painted by hand and brought to life.

The Whispered World has already caused a stir for its creative storytelling. Originating in Germany, it has been nominated for up to six German Game Developer Awards, including “Best Story” and “Best Soundtrack”, as well as the highly sought “Best German Game of the Year”. Already successful in Europe, the game has been translated and is now available for North American gamers.

Those eager to try a piece of Sadwick’s tale can check out the 600-MB demo, which offers the first of the four chapters of The Whispered World. The game is also available for purchase and direct download at GamersGate for $26.95 (and the Adventure Shop for our European readers for €39.99). Finally, there is an interesting making-of video available, as well as the game’s trailer featured below.

Bandrik I have to say, I'm really entranced by the looks of this game. And the main character is so blazingly unique. You play as a depressed jester/clown! At the very least, I WILL be checking out the playable demo! And I urge everyone that likes a more creative game to do so as well.

What, that we Westerners are capable of making good-looking adventure games that don't require an iconic plumber or a multi-million dollar budget?
