Three new mostly useless gadgets from Samsung

Three new mostly useless gadgets from Samsung

Samsung issued three press releases today detailing several new devices that have or will be released in the near future. These devices, while showing some advancements, will be unexceptional for the majority of the market.

3.5” Spinpoint F4 320 GB hard drive

The first device is a 3.5” Spinpoint F4 320 GB hard drive for high performance computing. The hard drive is the newest model in the Spinpoint F series. The hard drive has a one head platform design and has improved reliability and acoustic features over older models. The drive has 10% increased read/write performance and 7% lower power consumption than the Spinpoint F1, the first hard drive in the F line.

The F4 has 7200rpm rotation speed, a SATA 3.0 Gbps interface, and advanced areal density technology. The drive will operate quickly and quietly, using Samsung’s SilentSeek and NoiseGuard technologies. The F4 also has an 8MB/16MB buffer memory.

The Spinpoint F4 is available worldwide to key OEMs now.

SH-B123 Optical Disk Drive

Samsung is also launching a new Blu-ray drive combo, the SH-B123 optical disk drive, which reads BD-ROMs faster than any other drive. BD-ROMs can be read at a maximum of 12x, CDs at 48X and DVDs at 16X. The new drive also allows users to watch BD movies on their computers and record HD video.

The ODD uses two lenses and a laser diode structure to provide a stable BD read, and DVD and CD read/write performance. The Spherical Abberation Compensation Technology improves the read function when the protective layers do not have uniform thickness. The device uses 25% less power than other similar drives on the market, and improves the lead time. The overall timeline is reduced 17-37% over previous models.

The SH-B123 combo is available worldwide July 2010.

The SH-B123 can boast that it reads BD-ROMs faster than any other device on the market, but that’s of little importance, because Blu-Ray discs simply don’t need to be read that fast. There is little advantage to reading a BD-ROM at 12X over 8X.

SE-S084D

Samsung’s third new device is a slim external DVD writer for laptops and netbooks. The SE-S084D is 20% smaller and 25% lighter than conventional DVD writers, and is round and comes in seven different colors. It was created with a mobile lifestyle in mind.

The writer is compatible with all major operating systems, and writes CD-RW, DVD±R, DVD+R DL, DVD-R DL, DVD+RW and DVD-RW.

The SE-S084D is available now worldwide at online retail outlets, with a MSRP starting at $69.99

There are many other slim DVD writers out there on the market, and there is nothing remarkable about this one, except perhaps that you can color coordinate it to match your shoes. Also, the usage for a portable DVD writer is questionable, as the majority of consumers probably do not have a need for it, in light of how easy it is to send information electronically.

Samsung noted that all three gadgets were eco friendly.
