Toshiba announces 512GB SSD

The we-make-almost-as-many-things-as-Honda company Toshiba has recently unveiled details of its mammoth-like-whoa big 512GB SSD.

The new whopper uses Toshiba’s next-generation 43nm fabrication technology to achieve previously unreached bit density. While the drives do indeed use MLC cells, the performance clocks in at an impressive 240/200MBps read/write.

Toshiba Corp. (Toshiba) and Toshiba America Electronic Components, Inc. (TAEC)*, its subsidiary in the Americas, today announced the expansion of their line up of NAND-flash-based solid state drives (SSD) with the industry’s first 2.5-inch 512-gigabyte (GB)1 SSD and a broad family of fast read/write SSDs based on 43 nanometer (nm) Multi-Level Cell NAND. The new drives provide a high level of performance and endurance for use in notebook computers, gaming and home entertainment systems, and will be showcased at International CES 2009 in Las Vegas, Nevada from January 8 – 11, 2009.

Speaking of CES, Icrontic will be on hand to provide super awesome coverage, so we’ll see if we can grab shots of this little bugger in the wild.

Tim 512 GB is enough capacity, now they need to make them fast and reliable for long term data storage, and a significant speed increase for best gaming performance.

I've only heard of them being made in laptop-size 2.5" hard drive dimensions. Why not make them in desktop size 3.5" hard drive dimensions, extra capacity will be easier then.
  4. Thrax
Thrax 1) They're already more reliable than mechanical drives.
    2) They're already faster than mechanical drives.
    3) Increasing the enclosure to 3.5" dimensions will not increase capacity. The 2.5" form factor must be used to achieve the circuit density necessary to oblige #2.

Snarkasm Significant speed increase. You're joking.
