TSMC to make 32nm GPUs by year’s end

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company announced this week that it will be ready to produce 28nm GPUs in volume by Q4 2010.

The announcement comes on the heels of a topping ceremony commemorating the structrual completion of the company’s Fab 12, Phase 5 building located in the Hsinchu Science Park in northern Taiwan. The event was attended by TSMC SVP of Operations Dr. Mark Liu who lauded his company’s efforts to advance its manufacturing capabilities.

“TSMC has always striven to improve its trinity of strengths – technology leadership, manufacturing excellence, and customer partnership – in order to provide steadfast support for our customers and to join with them to forge a powerful competitive force in the semiconductor industry,” he said

“The topping of our Fab 12, Phase 5 facility, and our plans to rapidly move in equipment and begin volume production there in the third quarter of this year is another example of our competitiveness in providing steadfast support for customers.”

Fab 12, Phase 4 and 5 are TSMC’s most recent production facilities designated for R&D as well as initial volume production. Phase 4 began volume production in 3Q09, while construction on Phase 5 began at the end of 2009. Phase 5 is expected to begin volume production in the third quarter of this year to respond to recent and urgent increases in customer demand.

In addition to volume production of 28nm products, Fab 12, Phase 5 will also serve as the base for the development of a 22nm process as well as even smaller sizes. Research for 28nm and 22nm is currently being conducted at TSMC’s Fab 12, Phase 1 and 2 facilities, but they will be handed to Phase 5 for production by year’s end.

Finally, TSMC also intends to begin construction on Fab 14, Phase 4 located at its Tainan site in southern Taiwan. Groundbreaking is scheduled following the end of the Chinese New Year, with the facility complete and ready for equipment by the end of 2010.

  1. Thrax
Thrax This is an interesting development, particularly because there's an ongoing rumor that ATI is preparing a GPU refresh for the second half of 2010. Recent roadmaps, like some of the ones in this article purport the next GPUs to be of the 32nm variety. Making a new architecture on a new process is, however, rather difficult, as NVIDIA will attest.

It'll be interesting to see if it all pans out this way.

mirage This year will be really interesting regarding GPU technology.

GooD I really want to change my video card but news like that only makes me hold more on my 9600GT for the moment :P
