Confirming earlier speculation, Ubisoft has announced a new entry into their squad-based tactical shooter series, Ghost Recon. Entitled Ghost Recon: Future Soldier, the new game looks to revitalize the series, which hasn’t seen a release since 2007.
Ghost Recon: Future Soldier is being developed by Ubisoft Paris, the same team behind the stellar Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter games. The press release details that Future Soldier will feature cutting-edge technology, prototype high-tech weaponry and state-of-the-art gameplay.
There are no details that elaborate on any of these highlights, but the prospect of playing around with prototypical military weaponry is certainly enticing. Indeed, the Tom Clancy games are known for their militaristic authenticity, so we expect this game to offer a detailed peek into the future of tactical military combat.
The press release also confirmed the existence of a multiplayer beta for Ghost Recon: Future Soldier. The beta will be released this summer and is being offered to those who purchase Splinter Cell Conviction. The multiplayer beta currently seems to be an Xbox 360 exclusive.
Ultimately, it appears that Ubisoft is trying to spur renewed interest in the tactical shooter genre, which has lain dormant for about four years. Where squad-based shooters like Ghost Recon, Rainbow Six, Brothers in Arms and SOCOM once flooded the shelves, the industry has since pushed them aside and shifted towards solo soldier titles like Call of Duty 4 and Modern Warfare. Ubisoft is playing a heavy hand in attempting to rescue to the genre with Future Soldier.
Ghost Recon: Future Soldier will be released worldwide during the 2010 holiday season.
